travel to paleochora

Paleochora is located in the west of Crete at about 77 km from the ancient capital, Chania. It is a cozy village with 1500 permanent residents. It was once a quiet fishing village until the hippies discovered it in the 60s. From that moment on a large portion of the residents started to live of tourism. Do not expect partying youngsters, but a mixed crowd that mainly come for the rest and peace. On both sides of the village there are beaches. The largest beach is on the west side and is sandy. This beach is also suitable for windsurfing, because there is wind often. If there is a really strong wind, you better go to the other side of the village where one finds a pebble beach. If there is wind on the sandy beach, there will probably not be any wind on the pebble beach and the other way around

In the evening the main streets of Paleochora are closed for traffic and the restaurants are able to extend their terraces. It is a well visited center with many shops, cafes and restaurants.

Around Paleochora you will find many attractions such as beautiful picturesque villages, Byzantine churches, nice beaches and beautiful hiking trails. Make sure to visit the beach of (crowdy) Elafonissi, the nicest town of Crete, Chania and the Samaria Gorge.
